This is the very first Greg Berg composition that was sung at Carthage – aside from an arrangement of the hymn “Cold December Flies Away.”   I don’t remember the precise year,  but I know that it was the early to mid 1990’s …. so ancient history!   🙂   I wish I had a recording of the Chamber Singers singing this (maybe one will still turn up) but this performance of Caritas (from our Christmas CD “Great and Glorious Light”) will do nicely.

So small the stable,  so dark the night … but up in the sky shines so brilliant a light.

Follow that star and a Babe you will find …. who offers salvation to all humankind.

It’s the Child named Jesus – born tonight in Bethlehem.

So long awaited and yet a surprise …..  The shepherds can hardly believe their eyes.

They were expecting their Messiah to be … a leader of armies, a conquering king,

not the Child named Jesus – born tonight in Bethlehem.

Splendidly simple, the Father’s design … revealing Himself in this marvelous sign ….

Embracing the world that He longs to save … by coming to earth as a helpless babe.

It’s the child named Jesus – born tonight in Bethlehem.
