I love this scene-  it shows American tennis pro Andy Roddick exiting Wimbledon’s Centre Court to a standing ovation – a rather amazing site considering the fact that he had just beaten Andy Murray, the Scottish phenomenon (seeded third) who had been on fire all week and was Great Britain’s best hope for a men’s singles champion in many many years.  (They haven’t had a male Wimbledon champion in more than seventy years.)   But Roddick prevailed in a truly stunning display of grass court play.  What has been clear all week long is not only that Roddick is back at the top of his game,  but also that he remains one of the game’s very finest gentlemen and a credit to the game that he plays so well.   And as he walked off that court,  I found myself tremendously pleased for him and proud of him and so glad that America has a top player who represents us in such sterling fashion.   And tomorrow morning,  I will be hoping with all of my heart that he does the all-but-impossible and defeats Roger Federer in the final.   But even if he doesn’t, he’s already the champ in my book.
