Here’s another movement from my Short Requiem, commissioned several years ago by the Waterford High School Choirs and their director, Derek Machan. To set this text, I envisioned the liturgical chants- one might almost call them cries – that might be intoned from the top of a tall tower. That is the image I am trying to evoke in the main theme, with the surging minor seventh interval.
The three soloists are soprano Becky Ryan, tenor Nick Huff, and mezzo soprano Clare Reinholt — all Carthage students at the time. The clarinet soloist is Laura Wangaard Shapovalov.
The voices joining them are the combined forces of the Holy Communion Senior Choir and Carthage’s Lincoln Chamber Singers. This performance is from a concert called “Streams of Mercy Never Ceasing” which celebrated my 25th anniversary as minister of music at Holy Communion.
