This is a stunning song by the great Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886.) I vividly remember being introduced to this song back when I was in high school (37 years ago or so.) My first voice teacher, Cherie Carl, played me a recording of her own teacher, Janice Hanson- both to show me the song itself as well as the soprano’s fantastic vocal technique. I have never forgotten how exciting and inspiring that moment was. Since then, I’ve given the song to a couple of my students but never sang it myself …. until this recital. Note: I don’t recommend accompanying one’s self while singing a song as tough as this. I was lucky to survive! Nevertheless, it was an exciting challenge to undertake.
