Not too many people in my life know this, but my brother Steve and I used to sing together quite a lot- and we have the kind of blend that only brothers can have. This recording is something that we made in the recital hall at Luther back in the spring of 1982, right before I graduated. Our mutual friend Brad Will was in the recording booth, twiddling the knobs, and I think he did a pretty darn good job of capturing our sound. It’s me on the verses – but on the refrain, Steve takes over the melody.
I think of this as “The Rock Song” because a dear friend from Atlantic, Chris Roules, liked to call it that.
I like to dust off this song every so often – and as a matter of fact, on the “Streams of Mercy Never Ceasing” concert that commemorated my 25th anniversary at Holy Communion, this is one of the songs I chose to sing. This song means a lot to me. Truth be told, though, I would have much rather sung it with Steve.
Ah, such great memories. I can just picture you two…and Cindy, and Cherie and Amy and Joel, should I go on? Your musical gift helped develop my love of music and communicating through music. We are such blessed people to have opportunities to use, learn about and share our love of music and our God. Thanks for continuing to share your gift and love of music by helping others develop their gift.
Thanks, Jody. Agreed- we are ridiculously blessed to have enjoyed such opportunities.
Beautiful guys! I can close my eyes and see you singing there in the rectal Hall ( in your 21 year old faces of course)
Thanks. Seems like yesterday!
Greg and Steve,
It was amazing to hear your beautiful voices again! It took me back to how great worship services were with you and the Nichols! How lucky were we!!! I thought every church had outstanding music. Thanks for bringing back such great memories! I would love to have a reunion between your family and the Nichols! God Speed!
Wouldn’t that be fun? Glad you enjoyed this. I was glad to come across this. Speaking of the Nichols family, if you go on my Listen page, you’ll find a couple of recordings of Amy Nichols and me singing duets!
Amazing – gave me chills. Oh that brings back so many wonderful memories. St. Paul’s was blessed with beautiful musicians – I miss that.
Denise- Thanks for your nice note. This recording brought back a lot of nice memories for me as well.
Oh how BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL!! I have played this over & over & each time I have tears falling down my cheeks & dropping onto my lap. What a gift for you & Steve to share! Your God given voice graced our church & community for what seemed like too few years. Blessings to both of you & miss you both!
Thanks for the nice note! This recording sure brings back a lot of happy memories- and the song says so much about how we should live our lives. Glad it brought a tear to your eye. God bless.
Well done, men. And what a meaningful way to expel your God given breath. There are no greater words that we can utter than those exalting The One Who bought and paid for us with a price. We are not our own. He bought us and we are His. So, using your voice in this way is a winner.
