Masterpiece

Yesterday for Father’s Day we met Kathy’s dad plus Polly, Mark and Lorelai at the Olive Garden for a Father’s Day outing.   What a wonderful time we had- thanks mostly to Lorelai, who has this way of keeping us in stitches and who also knows how to charm our socks right off of our feet.

Grandpa’s Big Day

This morning all three of Holy Communion’s pastors had flown the coop - Pastor Jeff to Minnesota to celebrate Jack Barrow’s 75th birthday . . .  Pastor Steve to celebrate his honeymoon (he got married yesterday). . .  and Pastor Kathy to Bethania to fill in for Pastor Steve .  So into the breach stepped

A Kurt Farewell

By |

Not a “curt” farewell, a “Kurt” farewell.  Get it?  Nothing like being corny two days in a row.  This time it’s not because I’m tired - it’s because I’m sad and trying to make the best of a sad turn of events.  Our good friend Kurt Oian, technical director at the RTG for the last

It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Groomsman!

I must be tired today to write such a corny headline, but I just had to make some kind of super hero reference because of this photograph, which looks for all the world like a frame from a new science fiction movie.  Don’t I look like I’m forming some sort of plasma energy bolt?

Birthday Bashing

By |

I know the date June 11th very well because it’s the birthday of my best friend Marshall - but it turns out to also be the birthday of Craig Gall,  the director of the Kenosha Pops Band- and yesterday was Craig’s 40th birthday as well as the opening night of the 2008 summer concert season.

A River Runs Through It

Yesterday was my first opportunity to see with my own eyes the flooding in Racine just below Holy Communion.  I knew things were bad because much of that neighborhood was actually evacuated and Lutheran High School underwent extensive sand-bagging to prevent serious damage to the structure.  (I’m not sure to what extent those efforts made

High and Dry and Grateful

As I write this entry,  most of the midwest seems to be underwater and the words “Noah’s Ark” no longer evoke images of a popular water park nor of a Biblical tale but rather a pretty fair summation of what life looks like right now for a whole lot of people.   We have sunshine in

Clear Sky

Guys and Dolls just closed at the Racine Theater Guild, and although I was tied up with a Side by Side by Sondheim rehearsal for most of the afternoon,  I was able to get to the RTG in time for the last few minutes of the very last performance. . .  which is what I

Ravinia Rumble!

By |

Once upon a time,  I thought that a wild night of music at the Ravinia Festival was Richard Strauss’s opera “Elektra” with Leonie Rysanek in the cast.   But things were really  rockin’ and rumblin there tonight, courtesy of one of the best musicians on the planet, James Taylor.  My wife and her friends Val and

Thwarted!

By |

Well, it was a long time coming, but tonight I was finally going to make my first use of our membership at Razor Sharp Fitness Center.  I have known for a long long time that something like this needed to be part of my life, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  I
